A New Study
Genetic and Dietary Factors Influencing the Progression of Nuclear Cataracts
Presented in part at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Meeting, May 6–10, 2012, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
British researchers have shown that high levels of vitamin C may be protective against the progression of cataracts. Published in the Ophthalmology journal by scientists at King’s College, London, the study followed the development of cataracts in the eyes of 324 pairs of female twins over a period of 10 years. It found that participants with higher intakes of vitamin C were associated with a 33 percent reduction in the risk of cataract progression and had 'clearer' lenses than those who consumed lower levels.
Commenting on the study, lead author Professor Chris Hammond said that its findings “could have significant impact, particularly for the ageing population globally, by suggesting that simple dietary changes such as increased intake of fruit and vegetables as part of a healthier diet could help protect them from cataracts.”
As important as this study is, the reality is that evidence of a relation between vitamin C and cataracts has existed since at least 1938. In a paper published in the JAMA Ophthalmology journal that year, Estelle E. Hawley, Ph.D. and Ovid Pearson, M.D. described how they had found a decreased vitamin C content in the lens of the eye, and also in the urine, in patients with cataracts.
I Thank Dr. Rath for sharing these studies. His comments about these findings: "until medical schools and healthcare systems are reformed to take account of the latest research in vitamin C, nutrition and Cellular Medicine, the responsibility for spreading natural health education lies with us, the people. In this situation, the creation of a new healthcare system based on natural preventive approaches will ultimately depend upon each and every one of us and the extent to which we are prepared to take responsibility for sharing the scientific facts with others".
I Agree with Dr. Rath,
All Health and Well-Being does depend on us, to trust in our own capacities and judgements and to take responsibility and care of our choices, which includes the health of our eyes. Pharmaceuticals and prescription senses are useful, but overprescribed and are multi-million dollar industries. Be committed to becoming more aware and thoughtful about your health choices...
